OceansWatch Vision

Our Vision is of Sustainable, healthy and resilient Pacific Island communities.

 

OceansWatch Mission

In partnership with coastal communities we develop conservation action plans, sustainable livelihood projects and help communities adapt to the effects of climate change.

 

Activities

• We run annual expeditions aboard yachts.

• We encourage, facilitate and train OceansWatch members with yachts to partner with us to take part in OceansWatch projects.

• We undertake ecosystem monitoring surveys using International and our own methodologies.

• When a community requests it, we assist and educate them in Ecosystem Based Management and the setting up of Protected Areas.

• We assist communities in other ways, as requested to build their capacity to create a sustainable environment and sustainable livelihoods.

• We work with communities to help them find solutions to the effects of climate change.

 

OceansWatch is:

OceansWatch is an international not-for-profit organisation that has worked with sailors, divers, scientists and the public since 2008 to help coastal communities to conserve their biodiversity, develop sustainable livelihoods and mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Our vision is for sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems.
Our mission is to assist Island communities protect their marine environment from over fishing, pollution and climate change effects.

Sustainable livelihoods

Our vision is for Island communities to be sustainable.
Our mission is to work with Island communities that request our assistance to develop sustainable livelihood projects.

Climate change

Our vision is that people in coastal communities will be able to adapt to the effects of climate change.
Our mission is to help coastal communities to assess the likely effects of climate change and to mitigate and adapt to those effects.

We recognise the importance of respecting each other and the people in the communities where we work.  We see our interactions as an opportunity for us all to grow and evolve as we fulfil our mission.  We are ethical, value each other, acknowledge our efforts, communicate transparently and develop through feedback.

We are accepting of all people – regardless of our race, sex or age.  We are non denominational and invite all walks of life to enrich our shared experience as we fulfil our vision.

We value positivity and having great experiences on our journey.  We see OceansWatch as our opportunity to give in our own unique way and to contribute to the planet and its people.  We are committed to the health of our environment and the people that inhabit it.  We are conscious of our carbon footprint and pollution and collectively and individually do all we can to reduce these.

 

We are Savvy:

We have a wealth of professional resources available through our members and volunteers that has facilitated OceansWatch being a team of global thinkers.  We are innovative and cost effective in our undertakings and have our finger on the pulse of what is the latest and greatest – anything that will help us fulfil our vision effectively.

 

We take action now:

We recognise that there is ample evidence that climate change, overfishing, pollution and other anthropogenic effects have severely compromised the world’s oceans. We believe that the time to take action is now, to mitigate and reverse these ecosystem pressures.

 

 

We are fully registered as a charity in New Zealand and have a sister organisation in the US with a 501c3 and in the UK. We have a sister organisation in the Solomon Islands and are currently registering in Europe and in Vanuatu.
