Communities

A video of one of the elders in a community thanks OceansWatch for their work.

OceansWatch has been working with our community since 2010 through community request to assist us in the area of marine conservation. From that time on OceansWatch has been very instrumental in the establishment of our marine protected area (MPA) which is now in its second year. So far there are positive impacts OceansWatch International has created in our community through their work and professionalism.

Our community felt that there are other sectors that we would like OceansWatch International to support us on, especially in the area of climate change, water and sanitation and so forth. We firmly believe that through OceansWatch International professionalism we would witness a new development in terms of managing our resources for our future generation.

Having spent a year or so sailing from Greece to New Zealand with my family (husband Mark, Mia - 9 and Lochy – 8) I was looking for something a little different for the next leg of our journey. Although we had visited several Pacific Islands on our crossing from Panama to New Zealand, I felt that we hadn't really had the chance to connect meaningfully with any of the communities along the way. Sure, my children had had a truly international experience, visiting islands and meeting other cruisers along the way, but I had arrived in New Zealand feeling that something had been missing. But how can you connect with communities when simply passing through? And does it really matter?

This experience with OW has been a huge eye opener for me on so many levels. I have learned so many things, and unlearned a bunch more, and I am infinitely grateful for all the lessons and experiences. I will forever remember this adventure with all of you, and can draw from it in so many aspects of my life. I have learned about personal space, about perseverance, about loving acceptance, about forgiveness. I have seen people and felt cultures I would have never encountered otherwise. I have learned languages and myths, and played with so many cool little ocean creatures and island children. This has given me direction in life (or other directions) and has put every part of my being to the test.

Good luck in the future,

"This is an epic and life changing opportunity. If you know how to dive and sail then please consider taking a few months away from your life to immerse yourself in the Pacific culture and ocean."

"the most important thing I learnt here are probably things about what I really want to do and who I really want to be."
